Our Mission:

The mission of the Commission is to ensure that women, who are residents of the City of Gary, the utilization of their talents and full realization of their rights as citizens. Through this Commission, we educate the community on issues of special interest to women, using presentations, media contacts, written material and conferences.

Who We Are:

We manage two shelters in the City that cater to women and children who are homeless or victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Shelter Programs:

-Rainbow Shelter: We provide residential and non-residential services to women and their children. We have a 24-hour hotline, advocacy by Lawyers from Valparaiso University and NWI Volunteer Lawyers; information and referral; individual/group support sessions; parenting skills, budgeting and life management; provide clothing, linen and toiletries.

-Ark Shelter: We have sixteen (16), two bedroom apartments and a full laundry area to assist women that need services far beyond the State funded stay at the emergency shelter. Client can stay up to 24 months and pay rent based on HUD established income guidelines. The program covers NIPSCO, water and apartment maintenance for the families.

Donations to Gary Commission for Women

We receive many requests from individuals who would like to donate to the women's shelters listed. Please call the administrative office directly at 219-883-4155 and ask how to donate your items. If you would like to volunteer, please call the same number and ask for their current volunteer opportunities.
