Fact Sheet

  • Recycling is the process of turning one products useful parts into a new product; this is done to conserve on the consumption of resources, energy and space used in landfills.
  • By recycling 1 plastic bottle not only saves anywhere from 100 to 1000 years in the landfill but saves the environment from the emissions in producing new bottles as well as the oil used to produce new bottles as well as the oil used to produce that bottle.
  • For every 1 ton of plastic that is recycled we save the equivalent of 2 people's energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month's time and almost 2000 pounds of oil.
  •  Today the most common products in cities recycling programs are paper products, cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum.
  • Approximately 60% of our rubbish thrown away today could be recycled.
  • Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass
  • Re-melting aluminum and steel takes only 5% of the electrical power required to extract it from bauxite and iron ore. A reason why aluminum and steel companies have been RECYCLING for more than 20 years.
  • Glass never wears out. It can be recycled forever.
  • Aluminum is the most valuable material in the solid waste stream.
  • Recycling one tone (about 2,000 pounds) of paper saves 17 trees, two barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 1,260 miles), 4,100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for six months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space, and 60 pounds of pollution. HELP GARY SAVE SOME TREES!
  • REMEMBER contaminated RECYCLABLES like garbage, will go to the landfill, eventually, polluting rivers, lakes and our precious water supply.
  • WHY SHOULD I RECYCLE?  -  We generate a staggering amount of waster - nearly 130 million tons a year. Each of us contributes over 4.2 pounds per day. Land fills in America's major cities have completely filled or closed their landfills and will be looking for alternate ways to dispose of garbage.
