Welcome to the EMS Division
The Gary Fire Department teamed with the Methodist Hospitals of Gary to start the City of Gary Fire Department EMS Division on January 1st 1974. Since that time, the EMS Division has been the primary provider of Emergency Medical Services to the City of Gary. Since the inception of the EMS Division, Methodist Hospitals of Gary has been the sponsoring hospital and Dr. David Ross has been the Medical Director for the EMS Division.
Prior to then, Pre-Hospital care and transportation was provided to the community by local funeral directors. Modern EMS was an indirect offshoot from the Korean and Vietnam wars. The military had discovered by training corpsmen with key lifesaving skills and providing medical care on the battlefield, that survival rates of wounded soldiers improved. Those concepts, placed in civilian society, along with the TV show, Emergency, Professional EMS services were started across the country. Initially EMT's were created that provided first aid skills, Oxygen Therapy, Splinting and Bandaging, Patient Assessment and Transportation to hospital Emergency Rooms. Paramedics soon followed and advanced life saving skills were now being performed that included EKG Monitoring and Defibrillation, IV and Medication Therapy and Advanced Airway Maintenance.
The Gary Fire Department EMS is under the direct supervision of Assistant Chief Angelo Bruno. Assisting Assistant Chief Bruno with his daily duties are:
