. American Disabilities Act

The Commission proposes to utilize the administrative cost funds to provide an Accessibility Project/Staff Coordinator to assist the staff in the housing division with complaint intake under the Fair Housing Act and the Gary Human Relations Commission in regards to discrimination and unfair housing issues identified in private/public housing. The Coordinator will gather statistical data with reference to the number of disabled citizens of Gary; provide technical assistance where need; and coordinate educational workshops/seminars/training on the handicap provisions of the law as stated in the Gary Human Relations Ordinance, 6754.

The technical assistance will include all housing related facilities with regard to accessibility and services provided to person with disabilities to efficiently keep track and develop a monitoring system with regard to facilities which are in compliance and those needing to come into compliance for future review. Allowing us to know exactly which area of compliance the facility need to meet under the Fair Housing Act and the Gary Human Relations Ordinance.

The educational outreach/seminars will be in the areas of mortgage lending, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act and ADA provision. Activities will include but not limited to policies and procedures for filing all complaints concerning discrimination and the development of marketing strategies for dissemination of information to the community at large.
