DOWNTOWN HOUSING:

The City of Gary has targeted its Central Business District (CBD) for housing development, and several projects (below) are in varying stages of development. The impetus for this renaissance comes from many sources, from a stabilization of the overall Gary housing market, the introduction of attractions to the downtown area and, very importantly, the decision by the City itself that targeting downtown for housing programs will lead to an increase in other development downtown.

2A. HOPE VI HORACE MANN: This project is an extension of the Duneland project, and will bring over 120 new units of housing to the Central Business District. After decades of population loss, the City's traditional downtown is the focus of a housing renaissance, with one development (Emerson Renaissance) completed and four others planned.
The Hope VI development - the first of these four scheduled to begin construction, will include market-rate, subsidized and public housing units within a block of Broadway and only minutes away from highway access, the Genesis Center, and the US Steel Yard.
