DOWNTOWN HOUSING:

The City of Gary has targeted its Central Business District (CBD) for housing development, and several projects (below) are in varying stages of development. The impetus for this renaissance comes from many sources, from a stabilization of the overall Gary housing market, the introduction of attractions to the downtown area and, very importantly, the decision by the City itself that targeting downtown for housing programs will lead to an increase in other development downtown.

2C. EMERSON RENAISSANCE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: The Gary Urban Enterprise Association (GUEA) has constructed 44 units of attached housing in the Emerson neighborhood, just blocks from the new minor league baseball stadium. The project is a partnership with the GUEA, the City of and the Gary/Hammond/East Chicago Empowerment Zone. It was also unique in that it directly employed 32 neighborhood residents in construction, 60% of whom are still employed by the companies that performed the work.

This development will serve as a catalyst for more residential development in the Emerson neighborhood, and strengthens the market base for new commercial establishments in the stadium area.
