UNIVERSITY PARK

The Planning Department is one of several city departments, institutions and business interests involved with implementing the University Park Concept Plan.

The plan, completed in 2003, focuses on the 35th Avenue corridor, in the northern portion of the Glen Park neighborhood. This corridor is home to two colleges, an elementary school, and several residential neighborhoods in varying conditions. Recommendations for the adjacent areas of the Broadway commercial corridor are also included in the plan's concept. The concept plan proposes residential, open space, commercial and institutional development to bring about a vibrant renewal of the area.

The Planning Department will contribute ideas to implement several key elements, including:

  • joint development (see above) with private commercial interests.

  • open space improvements to beautify the area, improve the quality of life there and, via a pedestrian/bikeway network, connect the neighborhoods to the many attractions in the area.

  • transportation improvements to improve the flow of people and goods into as well as within the neighborhood.

  • assisting in implementing plans to work with community groups to improve the condition of the commercial and residential structures in the area.
