5th AVENUE STREETSCAPING
The City of Gary is partnering with the Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) to implement a streetscaping project, primarily east of Broadway in downtown Gary. This section of 5th Avenue is anchored by the Genesis Convention Center and the U.S. Steel Yard and is called the Stadium District for that reason. The main focus of the project is to make the corridor friendlier to the thousands of residents who will live and work in close proximity, and the over 250,000 sports fans who visit downtown Gary on a yearly basis.
The grant, totalling $300,000, is the first phase of of an initiative that will add landscaping, pedestrian and transit facilities, new lighting and signage to this corridor, among other things.
In addition to a design concept for the streetscaping and engineering specifications for its construction, the City is also anticipating the creation of design standards for development along this corridor. Conducting these tasks concurrently, as part of one effort, will create guidelines for development of neighboring parcels that will be consistent with the spirit of the streetscaping.
Additional funding is being sought for this corridor thru traditional Transportation Enhancement grants.
